University of Illinois Fighting Illini
The log cabins that used to dot the landscape in the Land of Lincoln have given way to the three campuses of the University of Illinois. Established as a land grant institution in 1867, the university has grown to include campuses in Chicago, Springfield, and Urbana-Champaign. Its roughly 70,000 students (more than half of whom study at the Urbana-Champaign campus) can choose from academic fields such as business, fine arts, and medicine. The Urbana-Champaign campus is the site of the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (which developed Mosaic, the basis for popular Internet browsers such as Netscape Navigator); the university's Springfield campus houses the Institute for Public Affairs.
