The University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill has some 27,000 students enrolled in 71 bachelor's, 110 master's, and 77 doctorate degree programs. The highly respected university, the flagship of the 16-campus University of North Carolina system, provides academic programs in areas such as art, journalism, law, medicine, and psychology. It also has study abroad, honors, and ROTC programs, as well as more than 25 varsity sports teams. Notable alumni include writer Thomas Wolfe, basketball star Michael Jordan, and former President James Polk. UNC was chartered in 1789.
